Call to Worship

One:    We have been waiting and wondering,

Many: Questioning and stumbling,

One:    Longing and groaning,

Many: Gathering and becoming.

One:    God of Creation, we long to be made new!

Many: Jesus Christ our Redeemer, we long to be healed and made whole!

One:    Holy Spirit of Life, we long to be inspired and empowered to work for the Kin’dom!

All:       Come, Holy Spirit, move among us once more!

Pastoral Prayer

God of wind and flame,
we gather today as we do each week,
perhaps with great hopes, or maybe with low expectations. We long to feel your presence in our midst,
to know your Spirit’s touch in our hearts, minds, and bodies.

Some may fear your disruptive power,
while others groan with the burden of the status quo.

We confess we are sometimes as cynical as the crowd
that thought the disciples were drunk,
rather than amazed by the wondrous work you are doing among us.

Open our eyes to see the suffering of our neighbors
and to perceive the flame of your presence,

open our ears to hear the groans of Creation
and the good news you are translating into words we can understand,

open our minds to the possibility
that you are doing something new once again,

open our hearts to the gift of your Spirit:
Advocate, Comforter, Voice of Truth, and Guide.

May your Spirit breathe hope and healing
into the lives of those in our community
who are facing illness, death, loss, or suffering…

May your Spirit breathe peace and power
into the lives of all your children around the world
who are facing oppression, violence, or injustice…

May your Spirit breathe humility and a listening heart
into the lives of all who uphold unjust systems and structures…

May your Spirit breathe compassion and generosity
into the lives of all who have the power to make life better for others…

Let our lives be transformed by your breath of life blowing through us,
enticing us to breathe with you,
to join your conspiracy of love and justice,
so that our thoughts, words, actions, attitudes, and relationships
all testify together to the good news of Jesus Christ,
the gift of wholeness and right relationship,
grace and abundant life available to all.

In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Prayer for the Offering

Effervescent Holy Spirit,
stir us up to see our resources as belonging to God,
our gifts as opportunities to bless others,
and our lives as testimony to the ongoing work of Jesus Christ.

May our prayers, our presence,
our gifts, our service, and our witness
be invested generously and faithfully
so that they may bear fruit for your Kin’dom. Amen.

Pentecost Litany of Thanks

One:    People of God, let us give thanks
for all that God is doing in our midst.

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

One:    For the saints who started this congregation
to be the hands and feet of Christ in our neighborhood,

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

One:    For all who have given generously
of their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness,
so that we might build a diverse and Christ-centered community
that expresses God’s love, meets changing needs,
and proclaims the Kin’dom of God emerging in our midst,

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

One:    For the faithfulness of God,
who has used those gifts for Kin’dom purposes,
birthing new ministries and reaching out to God’s children,

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

One:    For the power of the Holy Spirit,
that stirs up the faithful like a mighty wind,
sparking hope, igniting joy, burning for justice, blazing with compassion,

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

One:    For the ongoing work of Pentecost,
to translate the Good News into the languages our neighbors need to hear:
bread for the hungry, shelter for the homeless,
loving care for children, liberation from the things that bind,
healing for the hurting, and hope for those in despair,

Many: We give thanks for God’s Spirit that moves among us here!

Benediction

As you go from this time and place,
may you know that the God who created the world
isn’t finished:
not with you, and not with the world.
Pentecost is still coming, today and each day.
May the Holy Spirit breathe new life into your spirit,
that you may be strengthened to continue the work of Jesus Christ,
proclaiming the coming of God’s Kin’dom
in all that you do.
Amen.
